According to the BBC, the United Kingdoms (UK) political officials are dedicated to maintaining the enthusiasm and momentum for athletics after hosting the 2012 Olympics in London. Prime Minister David Cameron is set to announce how he intends to support a sports legacy until the 2016 Olympics. Competitive sports participation will be made a requirement in elementary education. Sports such as football (soccer), hockey and netting will be part of the curriculum.
This news does not come without controversy. Over the last few days, Prime Minister Cameron was featured on several morning television shows where he defended his previous suspension of monies allotted to provide funding for sports activity in elementary schools for two hours a week. His explanation was that in the past the money had been used by some schools to promote activity that did not fall in line with Camerons definition of sports, Indian dancing classes being the example he shared. Nevertheless, a major change will be emphasized in the UKs elementary programs.
